On LinkedIn, I found this interesting question: “Is it every employee’s responsibility to be self-motivated or is it the employer’s responsibility to motivate their employees?”  My answer is both.  To work toward excellence, you have to be hungry, which means you have to have passion, desire, drive, initiative, and you have to be proactive and self-motivated.  Why depend on others to motivate you anyway?  However, it is also the employer’s responsibility to get the best out of their people, and to do that they must provide meaningful work, build a team, and create a culture of excellence that will motivate and inspire.  In short, we are all responsible for our performance.
