The greatest part of my job is getting to spend 4 years with my students.  Music professors get to teach their students from the time they are freshmen to the time they are seniors, and sometimes longer.  You get to watch them grow up right before your eyes.  Other professors in other departments don’t always get to say that.  They may have a student take their class for a semester, get to know them a little, and then they’re gone and they start over the next semester with a whole new crop of students.  Music professors teach their students for 4 years, always welcoming eager freshmen while saying goodbye to graduating seniors.  It’s exhilarating to watch them grow musicially, academically, and socially into young adults, and the best part about it is the relationships you form and the opportunity you have to be a mentor.  It goes by so fast.
